Carat |
| Carat is a unit of measure that denotes the weight of a gem- often referred to as ‘Carat Weight'. One Carat equals approximately 0.20 grams. Therefore, the higher the Carat Weight, the heavier is the gem. It also follows that, if all other things are equal, higher Carat Weight gems are worth higher prices. |

Cut |
| The most important factor in determining the brilliance of a gem, ‘cut' refers to the shape of the gem. Gems are available in a wide variety of shapes from round cut ‘Solitaire' to square cut ‘Princess' to oblong cut ‘Marquise', among others. It is not at all unusual to have different gem sizes and shapes appearing on a single piece of jewelry. |
| Clarity |
| Clarity refers to the existence or lack of imperfections present in a gem. Clarity rating includes, from highest to lowest: F -flawless; VVS -very very slight inclusion; VS -very slight inclusion; SI -slight inclusion; and I -inclusion. It also follows that, if all other things are equal, higher clarity gems are worth higher prices. |
| Color |
| Color rating is a measure of the color of a diamond. Color ratings are from D (relatively white or colorless) to Z (relatively brown). All other things being equal, the closer the color is to D, the higher is the value of the diamond. |
